Performance and Quality Issues in Matching Pursuit Residue Coding

چکیده

Usually a block-based DCT transform is used in hybrid video coding to decompose motion compensated residuals. Another method, which has been successfully applied to the coding of video residuals, is Matching Pursuit (MP). Matching Pursuit is an overcomplete expansion technique providing some advantages over orthogonal transforms like DCT. In this paper we discuss the coding efficiency of a MP codec based on a set of rotated non-separable Gabor functions. The efficiency is compared to that of the DCT-based H.263 codec on the one side, and to an already proposed MP system based on separable basis functions on the other side. Both, the coding as well as the runtime efficiency is considered in our work.
